Sickness Certification

For the first three days of sickness you do not need a certificate. For three to seven days of sickness your employer will give you a “self-certification” form to complete – you still do not need a certificate from the doctor.

For over seven days of sickness you will need a certificate from your doctor. The doctor cannot issue this without seeing you during this illness, unless you have been seen in hospital and the doctor has received a letter from the hospital. For ongoing certificates please pass your request to reception (you may not need to be seen by the doctor) giving details of your illness and the dates that you require on the certificate.

If you require a certificate for less than seven days for any reason, a private certificate can be issued at a cost of £10.
